Living in the lightning capital of the United States leaves us constantly stranded and needing something to do on a rainy day. Here are some simple, inexpensive things to do in this area.

1. Watch the process of Glassblowing

If you have an interest in art or science, or you are just looking to widen your horizons, the Glass Studio & Hot Shop on 1st Ave N. is a great place to go. They offer shows Tuesday through Saturday hourly from noon to 4 p.m., and Sunday hourly from 1-4 p.m. Mondays are reserved for artist studio time, but people are welcome to watch. The studio also offers classes for those who want to make their own glass. If you go to a class, be sure to get there early to walk around and see the art.

Glass Studio & Hot Shop is located at 714 1st Ave N, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

2.  Visit the local museums

St. Petersburg has a huge art scene, which means there are great museums in the area. The best part about this option is there are student discounts! All USF students get into the Salvador Dali Museum for free, although we do not get free parking. However, the museum is in walking distance of campus.

If you’re willing to drive a little further, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art has some must-see art with free admission to USF students. There is a large variety of exhibits at this museum so everyone is sure to find something they like. Be sure to bring an umbrella as there are uncovered paths throughout. Also check to make sure the Skyway bridge is open before heading out, as it often closes due to weather.

The Tampa Museum of Art is another great museum that is free for students. This deal is not just for USF students either, so if you have friends visiting from another college they will be admitted for free as well. The Ringling and Tampa Museum of Art are both great choices for people interested in a variety of arts.

3. Visit Florida Orange Groves & Winery

For older students, this winery could be an exciting place to visit on a rainy day and sometimes it has Groupons! This winery has tropical Florida wine that will help you feel like this drizzly day is a beautiful afternoon at the beach. They offer tours and tastings and have a store.

Florida Orange Groves & Winery is located at 1500 Pasadena Ave S, South Pasadena, FL 33707

4. Plan a movie day

On days when there’s a guaranteed storm coming, get with your RA and plan a movie marathon day on your floor’s lounge. The easiest way to meet new people is to go to events on campus, and everyone loves a good movie day.

5. Have a pot luck

If you’re not in the mood for a movie day, plan a potluck with you RA. After eating at the Reef non-stop, having a potluck could be a nice change of pace. If you’re trying to get rid of your food plan money, you can buy some items you need from the Reef to make some food for your potluck.
