Explore the Chihuly Collection: Sights to see in downtown St. Pete

Dale Chihuly is a world-renowned glass sculptor. He creates large, intricate and beautiful pieces that hang from walls, create forests of glass and suspend from ceilings. His work is showcased around the country, and The Morean Arts Center is one of those places. It houses some of his work in a permanent gallery located in downtown St. Petersburg.

The collection is small, but each piece takes up space and garners attention right away. The pieces inside the museum can stand alone, but work well together to give the viewer a glimpse into the different styles of Chihuly.

This piece, titled Float Boat, is located about halfway through the collection. On the floor of the gallery, a large boat holds glass balls of all sizes and colors. The larger of these glass sculptures spill out onto the sides of the boat, and with the black floor and walls, look like planets suspended in space.

Even walking through hallways exposes the museum-goer to Chihuly’s work. The viewer walks through a rainbow of light given off by the multi-colored glass bowls trapped and illuminated in the glass ceiling. It can be overwhelming to the senses to look up and see all this glasswork stacked on top of and around each other. It mesmerizes the viewer to look at the piece from below.

This piece is unique from the rest in the gallery. It’s neon and has a own room away from the rest of the pieces. It lights up the entire room like an ocean of neon light and makes for a nice change of pace from the other pieces in the gallery.

Orange glass sculptures hang along the walls as you walk.

This blue and white, twisted chandelier hung from the ceiling near the entrance of the gallery.

These glass bowls, located at the exit of the gallery, give the viewer one last look at Chihuly’s handiwork.

The Chihuly Collection is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. The general admissions price for adults is $19.95, but student discounts are available with a valid ID.
